How to make the perfect matcha latte every time

October 13, 2020

Using three main ingredients, here’s how to make the perfect matcha latte in five steps.

If I’m being honest, a warm matcha drink is what gets me out of bed most mornings. It’s replaced coffee for me because it gives me a “gentler” caffeine boost, whereas coffee can make me a little jolty.

Before I started making my own, I only really tried matcha at Starbucks when they introduced their tea lattes. It turns out, it’s easier than you’d think to whip up your own matcha latte at home with just a few ingredients and tools.

This recipe contains optional collagen powder, a skin-boosting ingredient. 🙂

I’ll also show you how to make an iced version of this matcha latte drink at the bottom of the page!

Skin benefits of matcha

  • Matcha is loaded with an antioxidant called catechin, which helps stabilize free radicals in your body that can lead to cell damage.
  • Helps reduce inflammation in the body.
  • Full of skin-friendly vitamins, B2 and E, which helps skin glow from the inside out.

Ingredients you’ll need

  1. Matcha powder (This one is my go-to brand. It’s amazing value for the quality, and tastes amazing!)
  2. Milk of your choice (I like mine with oat milk for the creaminess)
  3. Sweetener of your choice (My favourite is maple syrup, but I also enjoy it with honey)
  4. Hot water
  5. Collagen powder (optionalThis is my go-to brand for collagen. I’ve noticed my skin feels more plump and resilient with consistent use!)

Tools you’ll need

  1. Milk warmer for a hot latte (This is close to the one I use – I use it at least once a day, so I got my money’s worth! If you don’t have a milk warmer, you can also heat the milk on the stove)
  2. Frother to mix everything (I recently got this frother and it’s amazing. You can also use a small whisk!)

1. Get your milk heating

Pour 1 cup of milk into the milk warmer and turn the unit on. It’ll heat up while you get the rest of the latte ready.

For a hot latte, you’ll also want to start boiling about 1/2 cup of water.

2. Add powders and sweetener into your mug

Now’s the time to add a spoonful of matcha powder. You can use more or less depending on how concentrated you want your latte. I usually use about one teaspoon of matcha powder, and two teaspoons of maple syrup.

If you’re using collagen powder, add a scoop in with the matcha and maple syrup.

3. Add hot water into your mug

Take the hot water you’ve boiled and add just enough water to fill your mug about one inch high.

4. Whisk it all together

This is the fun part: take your frother or whisk and mix everything together until you have a smooth, frothy texture.

5. Combine with heated milk

Now, the final step. Take your milk and slowly add it to your mug. If you’re into latte art, now would be the time to experiment with your skills!

And there you have it – a matcha latte made right in your kitchen that will transport you to a cafe (remember sitting for hours in a cafe? I miss that).
